Kung Fu Panda
by Hans Zimmer and John Powell
Opens: June 6, 2008
Hans
Zimmer and animated films?
Just not sure what to expect for
KUNG FU PANDA. While he
did an admirable job with THE
PRINCE OF EGYPT and THE
SIMPSON'S MOVIE, ZIMMER's score
for MADAGASCAR was one of his
most uninspired to date.
KUNG FU PANDA looks like it
could be a good time and with
the subject matter should allow
HANS ZIMMER to dip into some
nice Far East cliches. To
keep from getting a score-chop
to the sternum, we have to be
cautious.

Mongol - Part 1
by Tuomas Kantelinen
Opens: June 6, 2008
Hopefully
an improvement upon his last
period film, NOMAD, Director
Sergei Bodrov's big-budget,
international film MONGOL - PART
I, looks like it could be an
epic with a noteworthy score.
Bringing composer Carlo Siliotto
would certainly be a great move.
The film was scheduled to
release in Russia in the Fall of
2007 and dates for a USA release
range from early 2008 through
August. Whenever it does
release, this will likely be one
not to miss.
UPDATE!
January 17, 2008
I received
a friendly email noting that the
composer for MONGOL is one
TUOMAS KANTELINEN and been able
to hear a few pieces from this
score and can safely raise the
Anticipation-level up to
Medium-High! This is good
stuff here! Now pray there
will be a full soundtrack
release.

The Incredible Hulk
by Craig Armstrong
Opens: June 13, 2008
It took
forever to finally get a glimpse
of this film, but when the
trailer was eventually released,
there was a bit of a
"thud"...somewhat softer than
the one contained in the trailer
itself. Maybe after Ang
Lee's attempt at bringing are
mean, green friend to the big
screen, yet another go at the
origin story is necessary, but
color me unexcited for this one.
The hiring of Craig Armstrong is
an intriguing one. He can
certainly deliver intense action
and even heartfelt melody, but
just what tack he'll take for
THE INCREDIBLE HULK is anyone's
guess...and leaves me uncertain.
I'm say to be cautious on your
expectations here.

The Happening
by James Newton Howard
Opens: June 13, 2008
M. Night
Shyamalan - love his movies or
hate 'em, at least he has the
good sense to go back to the
JAMES NEWTON HOWARD-well over
and over. I am one of the
apparent few who really have enjoyed all
of Shyamalan's filcks. (Yes even
The Village) I'm
pretty certain JAMES NEWTON HOWARD's scores play some role
in that. These two
talented guys haven't dudded out
together yet, so I'm full of
optimism for THE HAPPENING.

Get Smart
by Trevor Rabin
Opens: June 20, 2008
Of all the
early Summer films, I have to
say that TREVOR RABIN being
brought on to score the GET
SMART remake is the most
surprising. He certainly
talented enough, it's just not
his normal genre. It's
nice to seem him still branching
out. The casting of both
Steve Carrel as Maxwell Smart
and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 is
nothing less than brilliant.
If the writing can hold up, this
could be some real summer fun.
Are you as intrigued as I am to
see what TREVOR RABIN will do
beyond the employment of Irving
Szathmary's original theme?

Wall-E
by Thomas Newman
Opens: June 27, 2008
Last
year's entry from PIXAR,
RATATOUILLE, was a decent film,
but was not up to par with so
many of their earlier releases. We move
into 2008 with WALL-E, a film
that looks like it will be a
delight for both adults and kids
alike - something Pixar has been
very adept at. It's great
to see THOMAS NEWMAN again as
well.
His last effort with PIXAR,
FINDING NEMO, was a very
memorable one and I look for
them to produce a similar
amount of animated magic for
WALL-E.

Anticipation-Level Movie Summary
for Quarter 2
Still not one "High"
anticipation-level given out?
Guess we're just being a little
cautious around here.
There are; however, 5
"Medium-Highs" so the
soundtrack-landscape looks like
its well on its way by June of
2008.
